Rethinking ‘Don’t Look Back’ – Moving Forward in Praise
We hate the phrase, “don’t look back.” How are we supposed to see the miraculous ways God worked in our lives if we never look back? Doesn’t make much sense does it?
By looking back after trying times in our lives, we are able to see the growth God has done in our lives and even in those around us. If we never looked back, we wouldn’t have seen all the ways God used the events in our lives to lead us to this moment.

Our past should never be forgotten, but it also should never define us. What we did should be left in the past, but what God has done should be displayed front and center. Does that make sense? It’s not about us—looking back is not about us—it’s about seeing what God has done for us! It’s about understanding what He has done for us! It’s about appreciating what He has done in our lives and praising Him!
It’s looking back but not wanting to go back.
See, people say ‘don’t look back, that’s biblical’ and they bring up Lot’s wife, who looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt. But she didn’t just look back. She looked back with longing. She looked back, wanting to be back there and not where she was. She looked back with longing for the things God was delivering her from. From the sin that God wanted her to leave in the past.
That is not the kind of looking back we’re talking about. We’re talking about when the Bible says to remember God’s faithfulness and love and what He did for us through Christ. How can one do that without looking back? How can one learn how to move forward without looking back? How can one praise God properly if they don’t look back and go “wow, thank you, Lord, for saving me!”.
Not looking back with longing, not as something that defines us, but at what God has brought us through. As a reminder of His goodness and grace that has carried us. As a form of praise to our deliverer! Not in ungratefulness, but in utter awe-inspired gratefulness!
Looking back helps us appreciate where we are. It helps us lift praise to the One who brought us through our trials.
Next time you look back, think of what God has done and praise Him for where He has brought you. Don’t look back with longing. Look back to assess how far God has brought you and praise Him for that miracle!
