KNOW THE NOVEL (Part 1 with Kayti’s Series Finale!)

Hey folks! It’s that time of year again where…*Kayti is knocked out of the way*

This is Percy *ahem* Fudgebottom, it appears that Kayti has decided to write a series! *cue shocked gasps* *Percy leans into mic* And she’s publishing the first book next month on her birthday and has almost completed the first round of edits on book 2! *more gasps*

Give me that mic. *Kayti jerks mic from Percy’s hands* As you all might know, I’ve been working on Emberling for a while! 2 years in fact and originally it was a standalone…well, now not so much. *laughs nervously*

*Percy grumbles as he crosses his arms*

Welcome to The Chronicles of Uriu! A 3 book epic fantasy series for teens!

Reef – A Chronicles of Uriu Novelette #0.5
Emberling – #1
Project W – #2
Project S – #3
And there’s other stories in my head that are short stories of novelettes.

I did 2 parts of Know the Novel last year for Project W (Here and Here), this year I’m hoping to make it through all 3 Know the Novel post with book 3 in The Chronicles of Uriu!

Before we start I could really use some help with Emberling’s launch tour – https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfMKwR0atIggPUZCyNkReTA2cVQ_wDecLsEB-nZ1drdFfSH9g/viewform?usp=sf_link

So, shall we get started?

I think we shall!

1. What first sparked the idea for this novel?

Well, I finished Emberling and realized there was more story to tell with the standalone and once I got to thinking about it and putting together all that needed to be resolved I realized I needed not one, but two more books.

And thus, Project W was born and subsequently Project S!

Project S is tying up all the loose ends and has quite the cast, it’s a bit scary to think about but it also has soooooo many cool scenes I want to write!

*Percy shakes head* She keeps putting off writing it by writing short stories and editing.

Be quiet, Percy.

2. Share a blurb (or just an overall summary)!

Going with a brief summary.

The world of Uriu is embroiled in a bitter fight where enemies seem to come from every side, unity among the lands is the only answer but seems near impossible to accomplish. Can they unite the kingdoms of men, Emberlings, Wavelings, dwarves, and giants? Or will all of Uriu pay the price for their mistakes?

3. Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects of the setting?

On a large scale the story takes place in Uriu, which is the world I’ve created for this series and is compromised of:

The Meadows of Harvanth – home of men
Englewood – home of the Emberlings
The Coast along the Byurn Cliffs – home of the Wavelings
Wolfe Mountain Range – home of the dwarves
The Shadowlands – home of the giants

On a smaller scale large portions of this story are centered around Englewood and the Shadowlands.

I love the vibrance and diverse life that is Englewood and the fire-wielding people that live there are a bonus as well.

The Shadowlands are rocky and brooding… I wouldn’t say I love the setting but there are a lot of interesting things that go down here and the giants have a very Roman-inspired feel to them with gladiator games and the worship of false gods.

I’m also excited to dive into exploring the Wolfe Mountain Range where the dwarves live!

4. Tell us about your protagonist(s).

Um, there are 5 of them. *hides*

I promise it’s vital to the plot of the story and just…I need them all for this to work. Honestly, sometimes I think I need more than five and then remember neither I nor my readers could keep up with more than 5. XD

Anyway here they are:

Evander (Giant)
He’s got a big mouth that gets him into a lot of trouble and that’s literally all he’s told me. That and he is not happy about being in chains yet would redo what got him here a hundred times if need be. *shrugs*

*Percy* Why is he in chains?
*Kayti shrugs* He hasn’t told me that either.

Channyn (Dwarf)
She’s fiery spirited and willing to do whatever it takes to free her people, even break the rules. There are a lot of other cool things about her and her people but for now, I’m gonna keep that under wraps.

Vyk (Emberling)
Vyk is a young Emberling who has literally been thrust into a position of leadership he feels incapable of holding. But there’s no one to give it to, so he shoulders the burden of the fate of his people and tries not to have a panic attack in the process.

Lagoa (Waveling)
She’s patient, understanding, and believes with everything in her that the Spirit holds her future and the future of the Wavelman she loves, even if he can’t see it.

Alastair (Human)
He’s bitter, angry, wrestling with a past that haunts and the mistakes he may or may not have made. He wants nothing more than to be left alone, but this war has a way of bringing the most unlikely people together and forming alliances.

5. Who (or what) is the antagonist?

There’s a lot that could be antagonist….giants, doubts, themselves, rogue riders, Alastair…etc…there are so many different facets coming into play in this book. These characters are literally getting hammered on all sides.

There’s giants and creatures and gladiator like games…there are so many threats and facets…where Project W slows down a little and gets very Introspective in what the heart of Uriu is dealing with…Project S goes out and shows you all the challenges they have to face to come out on top…if that’s even possible. Not even I know the answer to that. XD

6. What excites you the most about this novel?

Building the giant and dwarf cultures! I love adding to this world and seeing it expand and I’m excited to write the strange dynamic that is Channyn and Evander (simply as friends, but don’t worry, I have a love interest in mind for Channyn).

I love building cultures like I did with the Emberlings in, well, Emberling. And then again with the Wavelings in Project W and Reef! I love it! Getting to make their customs and what they call God in the story because each culture has their own name for Him, except that the Emberlings and humans use the same name of Elohim. 🙂

7. Is this going to be a series? standalone? something else?

The third and final book in The Chronicles of Uriu.

*glares at series* No more after this.

Except maybe some short stories and maybe novelettes and possibly…

*Percy clears throat*

*Kayti huffs* Moving on.

8. Are you plotting? pantsing? plansting?

I’d say plansting, leaning more towards pantsing at this point. I do have a few scenes mapped out but for the most part I’m winging it. XD Which has been a journey thus far…At one point I point this week I had 4 books mapped out and then Jaidie helped me condense it back into 3 books with a possible novelette because she said 4 was too many for the story I had.

She was right. If you every have story trouble talk to Jaidie…lol…she’s shoot you straight. And if you’re ever lacking ideas talk to Rissy because she’s expanded Uriu so much with subtle ideas here and and there. XD

Anyway I have a few scenes mapped, like these are the summit but the characters get to pick their own paths to get there.

9. Name a few unique elements in this story.

Ooo, people with fire powers, water powers, and earth moving powers… Crazy creatures, gladiator games, mental health, redemption, faith, and standing with each other in a crisis instead of against each other.

Just to name a few….oh, and romance. Gotta have some of that sprinkled in, right?

Also, unusual friendships because I have so many in mind…and dragons! I almost forgot to mention this book will have lots of dragons and twins!

If I’m being honest this book, which I’ve reference as Project U for months was originally going to be titled Unity…but Emberling, Waveling, Unity…didn’t sound right to me so Jaidie helped me figure out what I needed to move in order to make the new title work. So the story shifted from having Channyn as the main main character, to having Evander be the main main character. (basically meaning the Prologue is from his POV)

10. Share some fun “extras” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

Fear No More by Building 429 is a song I heard the other day and I can’t shake it. It’s become the anthem for the book. So enjoy! https://youtu.be/wMmmbJlWhtk?si=oHDfcePQ_fyWYOAO

And a Moodboard I made for my laptop screensaver!

Ah, I love the vibes a lot brighter than vibes for Project W, but not quite as bright as Emberlings vibes…I mean that Moodboard had a lot more fire…see:

Anyway, here’s the board for Project W just because…lol…

I’ll announce the title soon!

And that’s a wrap! Who’s excited for Emberling’s release? Did you get an ARC? If so I’d love to know your thoughts! I’m so excited about this series it’s been my favorite thing to work on lately! Even if I only have 800 words of snippets stuck in another doc to be used on Project S when I start writing, which is a lot of words for snippets, in my opinion. My snippets are usually between 2 and 5 sentences so…yeah…XD

Does Project S look cool to you? Do you like books with lots of people groups? Adventure? Suspense? How about redemption arcs? Let me know in the comments!

(Also, if you want to see some madness check out this post I did with M.L. Milligan. 😉 )
