Get to Know Rose of Fate!

Hi everyone! Today I’m introducing y’all more fully to my novella Rose of Fate that is releasing on March 7th as part of The Black Rose Collection!

I am super excited about this release and all the awesome authors I’ll be featured alongside!

This is a little scattered and I’m a little late because life has been a little hectic and brain has been foggy all week. Don’t ask why, I have no clue. Jaidie has been having the same problem and says “We has the dumb.” Lol…

Anywho, hoping next week is better! But for now let’s get started!

Has your WIP a working title? If so, tell us! If not, have you any idea of what it might be?

Yes, it does! Actually two if we want to be technical…lol…so my novella is titled Rose of Fate and it is featured in The Black Rose Collection!

Have you a synopsis for your WIP? If so, give it to us! If not, can you give us a blurb on what your WIP is about?

Yes! I have a blurb just for RoF (Rose of Fate) that a friend helped me put together. If you want to be super impressed she put this together based on two or three rambly text messages…lol…

The Rose of Fate is never wrong, or so they say, yet Rasil Gallion has been sentenced to a traitor’s death.

When the king is killed, Rasil’s life is stolen from him by the Rose of Fate, branding him the murderer that the kingdom is seeking. He escapes with his life, but looses his memories, his name, and who he is in the process.

Noami is struggling to face her own fraught path when her brother comes across a broken man who doesn’t know who he is. Despite the hardship he’s endured, the man puts his trust in Noami and her brother to keep him safe.

But when Noami finds out who Rasil is, and what he’s supposedly done, she’s forced to unpack his past and face her own, and decide whether or not she will protect Rasil from the fate of a traitor. From the death that the Rose of Fate demands.

Interesting? Or nah…

Have you a working/mock cover for your WIP? If so, show us! If not, have you an idea in mind?

Yes! And no…The Black Rose Collection has a cover, tah-dah:

But I don’t have just a cover for RoF…though Jaidie has assured me she has plenty of ideas. XD

How did you get the idea for this story?

Well, we were given a prompt…receiving a black rose is a death sentence. And then we had to come up with a story that went with that prompt. My sisters helped me come up with an idea, that was super cool, and I started plotting it but then when I tried writing it plotting stifled my creativity…lol…It was so cardboard!

So, I put that idea in a doc somewhere and restarted by pantsing! Just going with the snowy, rosy theme I had in mind with an amnesia trope and danger thrown in for plenty of adventure!

How long do you think it will be?

It is 23,104 words long!

Is it longer or shorter than you thought it would be?

Both…lol…I wasn’t sure at first I could make it long enough to be a novella and then there toward the end I thought it was going to be too long…haha…but I made it!

Who’s your favourite character?

Rasil is my favorite! Though I quite enjoyed Noami and her brother Ehsan as well…but Rasil is just such a cinnamon roll and his faith is so strong throughout everything he goes through. Plus…well, I can’t say that, that’s a spoiler…lol…

What’s your favourite memory related to this WIP?

Probably when we were on vacation and I wrote all of 200 words…lol…it was a nice memory because I was sitting on the couch with my phone, typing when I was supposed to be sleeping…lol…and though I didn’t write much it got me unstuck in a tricky spot. Plus, that vacation was great!

Even if the warm weather made it hard to think about snow…lol…

Any special person(s) who helped create it?

My sisters Marisa and Jaiden, as always they were there for every step of the journey. Including the moment I ditched the plot they helped me with to pants an entirely new story (sorry, guys!). Jaidie even helped read over and told me where to strength descriptions and became Rasil’s biggest fan!

Also, my dear friend Lillian Keith who cheered me on! And then read over and helped iron out some details.

And my friend Ella who helped with the blurb despite the fact that she’s never read any of the story…lol…

What’s your favourite scene so far (if you can tell about it without spoilers!)?

Hahaha, no.

My favorite scene is the biggest spoiler of all! It’s literally the climax and I just love how it all turned out! But I can’t say more and better shut my trapper before I leak spoilers. *clams up*

Can you give us a snippet?

Eek! Sure…*dives into doc, becomes lost and comes up with a snippet Madi picked out for graphics this morning* It’s short…but only because there are so many spoilers.

My head snapped up as a sword cleared its sheath, and Grendon the Grim stepped forward. “Rasil Gallion, you are under arrest for the murder of King Venton. The rose has decided, and the Rose of Fate never lies.”

Rose of Fate – Kaytlin Phillips

Is the story still what you thought it would be or has it thrown you a couple curveballs?

Curveballs, that’s funny! Yeah, there were a few curveballs as in the small mystery in the story…yeah, not even I know how that was going to pan out…lol…

Is there a Bible verse, poem, hymn, picture, or quote that helped shape this story?

Not really…just my sisters mostly. 🙂

When and where have you done most of the writing so far?

I did most of it at my desk! A little on vacation…and I believe I might have done some of it at the bar in the kitchen.

Where do you get inspiration for this story?

Um, the prompt, Madi gave us…lol…and I had a small playlist, but it’s rather pathetic…lol…

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m somewhere inbetween…I have a very basic idea of where I’m going, but its not more than a faint trail that is likely to change at any moment…lol…

Do you have a little ritual before you start writing?

Get ready for bed, make sure I have water, put on headphones and turn on some vibes, aka music. That’s literally it…lol…Oh, and I always turn the lights off.

Are you thinking of publishing this story?

It will be publishing on on March 7th in The Black Rose Collection!

What things have you learned while writing this story?

Oh, lots, if I could remember them…lol…

Let’s see, I learned there are 28 different types of Amnesia.

I learned how far you can throw a knife…it was an impressive distance but I can’t remember. *facepalm*

I also learned a lot about holding onto faith during the toughest of times, even in the moments when we maybe can’t remember who we are. About not letting fear control your actions and letting go of the past. I feel like there’s a lot packed into the story, but that might just be me. 🙂

Ack! I had so much writing RoF and I can’t wait for you all to meet Rasil and Noami! Their story was so fun to write!

Do you enjoy the amnesia trope? What is something random you learned during research? Are you excited about the Black Rose Collection? Anything you’d like to know about my WIPs, me, or writing?

Let me know in the comments!

Writing to Awaken Hope!

Oooh I love the sound of this story! Black Roses, amnesia, false accusations, in a medievalish(?) setting? Sign me up 😂 I totally meant to sign up for ARCs awhile ago but it slipped my mind so now I’ll just have to wait for it to release 😂 It’s definitely going on my to-read list tho!
It’s funny bc lately I’ve been looking for stories and things with the amnesia trope because I am writing a fantasy/mystery novel focused around that very trope, and I like to see how others write it for possible inspiration. (Bc I totally need some more ideas for it rn 😂) 28 types of amnesia, that’s a lot 😂😂
Some random things I’ve learned via research… Toast was popular during the Roman Empire era apparently. Also arrow wounds are a WHOLE lot more deadly than one would think, historically speaking. (I won’t go into details since it can be a bit… unnerving to some people but it’s quite interesting imo, if someone wants to write them correctly 😂) Um, I believe I looked up when the first foundations (as in makeup) were made… sometime a long long time ago 😂
Lots of medieval historical stuff too (tho I don’t write historical fiction, I do get inspiration off of it) such as the Princes in the Tower, The Black Dinner, the White Ship Tragedy… oh, and the war that started due to a kid dumping a chamberpot on his brother’s head xP fun times, fun times 😂
I’d totally be up to chatting with you about different amnesia things and how to resolve it, especially in light of my current WIP which needs some severe development 😝 I’m a pantser but I have to have some semblance of a plot or goal to work towards. Also what inspired you to put an amnesiac trope into your story? Did the main plot absolutely require it, or did it just enhance the main plot?

(Kayti here, replying througn the ST account because I’m too lazy to sign out and sign into mine…lol…)

Thank you!Ack, I know the feeling of forgetting to sign-up for ARCs…
That’s awesome! Some great books with the trope are Once I Knew by Victoria Lynn, Memory Lane was Moved (I haven’t finished this one but it’s been pretty good has mroe of the science for what’s going on), and I feel like I know of another book but can’t think of it right now. I also wrote a short story in Heard in Silence, titles Silent Memories that has the amnesia trope.
Oh, and ‘Who Am I’ is great! It’s a Jackie Chan movie with the amnesia trope and it’s so great!
Haha, those sound like some great random history tidbits! Lol….
You’re totally welcome to ask me questions but most of what I researched my brain decided to delete…lol…so I have only tiny bit of info and mostly drawn from books and movies. Since I always use the trope in fantasy and I didn’t need a ton of the sciene behind it. Often the memories resurface when a familiar object or word or name clicks for the person with amnesia. It add a nice air of mystery to the story as the character struggles to remember who they are, especially if people are chasing them!
What inspired me to use it was reading about it and just lovign the trope, so I knew I wanted to add it to the story. I feel like it made the whole plot work because there was no way my MC, Rasil, was going to go into hiding or lie to keep himself safe, so his lack of memory is what kept him safe for a while and then it ended up backfiring a little…lol…but I loved writing the story!
Oh, and I thought of the other book, and it’s my favorite! Resart by Gordon Korman! It’s a great amnesia trope! So much fun to read and just, yeah….

Ooh thanks for the recs! I’ll definitely look them up! Oh that’s neat!! You must really like the amnesia trope XD One of my favorite video game series always employs the amnesia trope, I feel like its super common in video games XD
Ahh that makes sense! That’s kinda the plan in my story, the MC with amnesia (who’s attempting to hide it) is helping another character track down a murderer, but all the clues are pointing to him being the murderer XP and so yes there’s definitely lots of chasing going on XD XD
That’s so cool how it really impacted the plot and actually made him safe for a while XD XD I’m assuming amnesia is your favorite plot trope XP
Ooh thanks! I’ll def look into that one!

Yep, it is one of my all time favorites! It never gets old for me…lol…
