Hey everybody! Kayti here! I’m so happy to be bringing you my 15 favorite Middle Grade Fantasy Books and Series!
As most of you know, my debut book was a MG fantasy, if you didn’t know that, well, now you do…lol… World of Silence was first step (and only step by myself) into the publishing world. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine and I love the story. Even if it could maybe use a 2nd edition…lol…
With that being said, MG is close to my heart and is still a genre I find myself returning to over and over and over again! So, when we asked for questions last week, many of you were interested in my list of books and authors that I love! So, here is the first installment!
I hope you find many good books to read!
The Green Ember Series โ S.D. Smith
This is a four-book series with two equally awesome spin-off series! (Though the last book in the Tales of Old Natalia was not my favorite if you wish to know why, ask in the comments, and Iโll try to explain without spoilers.)
It follows rabbit siblings Heather and Picket as they learn about the world they live in, how they fit, about fitting for what you love and believe in, and how to be brave even in the face of darkness. Throw in wolves, epic fight scenes, and lovable characters, and you have the package deal!
The Wingfeather Saga โ Andrew Peterson
A four books series with an epic for the finale! This is the most epic and awesome series! Book 1 has thrown many off with itโs slightly slower pace, but itโs really full of such warmth, intrigue, and humor that itโs well worth wading through.
Books 2, 3, & 4 will have you on the edge of your seat too!
These books follow Janner, Tink, and Leeli Igiby as they learn secrets, face dangerous villains known as the Fangs of Dang, and discover what it means to be self-less, to belong, and to love each other through every situation. Itโs a beautiful world where darkness is struggling to take over, music has power, and the Creator is mightier than any foe!
The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic โ Jennifer Trafton
A standalone story sure to have you rolling in laughter and if it doesnโt, well you need your sense of humor checked. I read this book two times back to back when I first got itโฆlolโฆit was that funny! So funny, I caught things the second time I missed the first time because I was laughing so much!
I love Persimmony Smidge and her determination. The situations, the people, the young kingโฆlolโฆIโm sorry, but this story is hilarious! Yet, so beautifully deep! I love it so much!
And fun fact: itโs written by Andrew Petersonโs sister-in-law!
The Chronicles of Narnia โ C.S. Lewis
I donโt think this seven book series needs an introduction as everyone knows it. But here it is. The Chronicles of Narnia! I love these books! From the Pevensie siblings to Coren, then Digory and Polly, and Eustace and Jill! So many great characters with so many amazing adventures!
A timeless series for the whole family!
The Hobbit โ J.R.R. Tolkien
Another story that doesnโt need an intro. The Hobbit or There and Back Again! This is such a good story! I love Bilbo and the dwarves!
Another book that the whole family can enjoy!
The Rose Legacy Series โ Jessica Day George
This is a series I stumbled upon at the library. Itโs a 3 book series with plenty of twists and turns sure to capture the heart of any horse-loving girl! Itโs a fantasy with some Western twist that make it quite interesting to read!
And the main character can talk to horses, but not as the horse just talks; but that they speak to her in her mind, and she can understand them. Itโs a really cool concept. I remember being slightly disappointed with the ending, but itโs a clean series that was fun to read!
Endling Series โ Katherine Applegate
A great series on identity and our place in the world and why everyone is important! This series was really super fun and cool! (Any Gambler fans out there?)
I feel that the 3rd book was a let down and honestly, it got a bit repetitive after a little while the whole thoughts and the same doubts that we thought she had conquered multiple times coming up again and again. But other than that I really enjoyed the series!
Gambler, Dog, Renzo, and Tobble being my favorites!
The Scourge โ Jennifer A. Nielsen
I love this book!!!! Ack, this story was soooooo cool! I loved it! It felt eerily like when the pandemic happened, but the conspiracy behind it was super cool and I loved it! The story was so good!
Annie was like a female Sage in most respects so it was super easy to like her! And I just really enjoyed the book! I will say it’s more like upper Middle Grade/young YA, so about 12 to 14 would enjoy it the most, I think.
The Ascendance Series โ Jennifer A. Nielsen
This is a 5 books series, though books 1 through 3 are my favorites! But even though some of the plot twist and the plots arenโt my favorite in the last you canโt not like these characters, if you know what I mean?
Sage is awesome! Heโs sure to keep you laughing and even my parents found him amusing when we listened to book 1 on the way to NM for vaca almost 3 years agoโฆlolโฆ
If you like, humor, action, adventure, sarcasm, action, humor, and tension as well as plenty of plot twist and unpredictable hero, these are most definitely the books for you!
Spark โ Sarah Beth Durst
Good dragon books are hard to find, so hard. But this is one of them! I fell in love with this story! Honestly, I loved the cover and then the book was fantastic and that just made it better!!!!
Mina is a quiet, sky girl, who ends up with a dragon that normally has a rowdy partnerโฆso why does she have one? WHere does she fit into all this? This story is good!!! That even small voices can make a big difference and itโs just soooo good!
Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes โ Jonathan Auxier
At first, I thought, this is going to be one of those ballantly MG books that talks down to the kidsโฆthen I started reading and quickly realized, the long title is deceiving and this book is fantastic! (I keep saying that, but this isnโt my favorites list for no reasonโฆlolโฆ)
Peter is a blind thief (because blind kids make great thieves, right?) and the adventure and our this wild quest he ends up on with Sir Tode!!!! I mean, wow! I love this book! The concept of a blind hero and the whole thing!!!!
Sophie Quire and the Last Story Guard โ Jonathan Auxier
This is the squeal to the above book, highly recommended that you read book one first. And I love Sophie and her story! The Story Guard concept and that stories come to life! I loves it! Itโs such a cool concept!
There is a lady who is into magical objects, and walking root thatโs odd, but not scary really. Itโs said she makes โpotionsโ but no chatting that I remember or anything weird. Super fun story!
Rise of the LivingWood โ Kylie Beevers
This was a new read for me this year, but if you love The Green Ember you should totally give this book a read! Itโs about foxes fighting against wolves and man, oh man! I loved it! It was such a fun read!
I completely enjoyed all the POVs and the story that built as we went along and I anxiously await the release of book 2!!!!!
The Mistmantle Chronicles โ M.I. McAllister
This series has been out of print for years, though they are slowly reprinting, but Iโve only read books 1-3 because 4 and 5 are so outrageously expensive. But I really enjoyed this series!
Urchin is a little dear and I love him to pieces! And then all the side characters, but especially Crispin!!! I loves him!!!! And there are so many fun animals and the otters! I love otters! Ack, sorry, memory lane over hereโฆlolโฆ
The Light Princess โ George MacDonald
My dad used to read this story to my sisters and I before bed, after we outgrew our all time favorite, Little Gorilla. Anyway, I remember laughing and giggling and enjoying this story about a floating princess so much!
Though, most of that was probably due to my dadโs incredible story telling skills, but nevertheless I love this story!
Conclusion
I had so much fun putting this list together! I failed to mention at the top, but each book or series is linked to the first book in the series on Goodreads so you can add them to your tbr (to be read) list!
Have you read any of these All of them? Are there any new titles for you? What would like to see next, my fantasy reads for YA and NA or more MG books in other genres? Or classics? Or Romance, mild romances that is, very clean…lol…
Let me know in the comments! I look forward to hearing from you all!
