One Sunday, oh, I’d say it was maybe five years ago; while helping with children’s church, a thought occurred to me. The lesson we were teaching was on David and Goliath, and once the lesson was over, I thought about the story. How David stepped up and said that he would face Goliath, and how Goliath mocked him and then was struck down. I think for the first time, my mind moved past the baffling part of how a shepherd boy killed a giant with a rock, and a new way to approach the story hit me. (No pun intended there. 😊) So, I want to share this thought with you.
Every one of us faces giants at some point (or points) in our lives. Now, I’m not talking about real giants. I’m talking about things that seem impossible, obstacles in our path that feel like giants.
Your giant could be sickness, job loss, hard times, money problems, life feeling like it’s against you, and many other things. Maybe for you, it’s fear of losing your job, coming to a standstill in your life, maybe, you’re sick and you don’t know why. It doesn’t matter what it is to you it’s a giant!
I want you to think about your giant for a minute, envision it. Pinpoint for me what that giant is. You got it? Okay, here’s what I think we’re all feeling right now. The thought of your giant makes you scared, trust me I know! It makes you feel small, powerless like your hands are tied? Or maybe a better way to put it is like you’re in the driver’s seat, but you aren’t driving. We each have a different giant, but we’re all scared of our giant. We all quake in its long, oh so long shadow.
Now, let us go back to David. He was a young boy who faced a very real giant, but he didn’t let that scare him!
Was David scared when he faced Goliath? It’s a good question, and I think it is safe to say the human side of David was, but he was also confident that God would take care of him! David knew he couldn’t kill Goliath. David knew there was nothing, absolutely nothing he could do that would kill that big ole giant, but… and this is a big but… David knew who could slay that giant. God could! So, David put his trust in God.
David trusted God so much that he was willing to stand up to his very real, very tall, very intimidating giant! And with God’s help, David defeated Goliath.
If we stand up to our giant and believe that God can take care of it, whatever it may be, then He will! It may not be the way you want Him to take care of it, and it will most likely involve some work from you, remember the stone that killed Goliath didn’t sling itself, and the fear that was swallowed to stand up to the giant probably didn’t go down easy. God may have something He wants you to do, something that may change your life! Are you ready for that? Are you ready to face your giant and say goodbye to fear?
Are you brave enough to look up and say, ‘God, give me the strength to slay my giant?’ Are you ready to slay that giant? Remember as you ready yourself for the battle that Chronicles 28:20 says:
“Be strong and of good courage, and do it; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God – my God – will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you…”

The bible is full of similar promises, here are some examples:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
Zephaniah 3:17 (NLT)
“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2 (NKJV)
“But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty…”
1 Corinthians 1:27 (NKJV)
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?

And so many more. All these verses speak of God’s plans of who He is! They are reminders for us that He is here with us in our hardest moments. He never leaves us. So, no matter how tall your giant feels remember this…
